There are no shortcuts.
Matt Gemkow, founder of Substrate — mid-race.
My coach always told me the difference between the pros and everyone else is they never skip the fundamentals.
I played team sports from the time I was a very young child until the day I graduated high school. Then I did something most of my teammates didn't — I skipped college and became an entrepreneur.
For the first time in my life, there was no season, no roster, no coach in my ear. But that lesson never left. And with no sport to train for, I turned the discipline inward.
I spent years training like a bodybuilder — piling on muscle, chasing aesthetics and hypertrophy. I learned all of it: the diets, the muscle groups, and every supplement on the shelf. If it promised a result, I studied it, and usually tried it.
Then I hit a fork. I was never going to touch steroids. So I figured — why not choose a sport where the ceiling isn't a needle?
That's when I found endurance. And it turned out to be the most enjoyable training of my life.
So now I run a lot. I bike a lot. I swim. I'm training for HYROX, and I sign up for races as often as my calendar can hold.
My training is busy — I'm in the gym, I'm running six days a week, and I'm on the bike not just to recover but to build the aerobic engine underneath everything else. Somewhere across all those years and all those miles, my supplement strategy got ruthless.
Every supplement I take fights for its spot on the roster.
I'm not wasting money on anything that doesn't move the needle for me — or that isn't so well-evidenced it's a no-brainer. What survives that cut is always the same kind of thing. The basics. The fundamentals. The stuff that raises the standard of all your training:
What earns a spot
Not the fringe. The handful of things that actually change how you train, recover, and live.
The fundamentals of fitness tie directly to the fundamentals of supplementation — and to general health and wellness. Do the basics, done right, for long enough, and what you're really building is time. We sell longevity — through fitness and sport, done the right way, by never skipping the basics.
That's the whole idea behind Substrate. No forty-product aisle. No proprietary blends. No theater. Just the fundamentals — placed right — for people who train like it matters.
